One of the few remaining fields near my wife's house. Most of the area has been developed with very big, fancy houses. A lot of people in Kerala go to work in the middle east then return with a lot of money which goes a long way in India. Then they build themselves a nice big house and either retire or start up a business of their own. This actually causes problems for the poor people who do not have the education to work abroad because all this money flowing into Kerala causes a "boomtown" sort of economy with rising prices. The government actually sets up price controlled stores so the poor people will still be able to afford to buy the neccessities.
When I first went to India the whole area around my wife's house was fields.
